The iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Saturday. Sunny. Clear skies. We decide to do a via ferrata on Paternkofel near the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

After breakfast we head off, not realising we’re about to join the rest of Italy (and a few other countries) who all decided to converge on the Tre Cime!

By the time we get there the car park at the road head is overflowing. We find parking near Misurina and wait for the bus to get us to the road head where we start our walk, losing a fair amount of time in the process. Agreeing that it’s too late to do the via ferrata, we settle on taking a walk around the three peaks instead. We bypass the other two rifugios on our route, hoping that there may be fewer people at Rifugio Locatelli on the far side of the peaks and more than an hour’s walk away. Alas it’s not to be. It’s Saturday. The sun is shining. And it seems that everyone who is not in bed or dead have come to Tre Cime for the day…

Drinks and cake come with an unsurpassed view of the iconic three peaks! And turns out to be more than ample compensation for not being able to do the via ferrata and being surrounded by a few thousand people…

And despite the hordes of people, looking like a line of ants on the paths to and fro and around the Tre Cime, we had a near perfect mountain day!
